Authorities have intensified their efforts to locate the remains of Kristin Smart, serving a search warrant Wednesday at a residence in Arroyo Grande, California. The property is linked to Paul Flores, the man convicted of Smart’s 1996 murder, and is currently occupied by his mother, Susan Flores.

This development marks a significant new phase in a decades-long investigation that has left Smart’s family without closure. Despite Flores’s conviction in 2022, Smart’s body has never been recovered, a reality that has haunted the community and her loved ones for nearly 30 years.

A New Front in the Investigation

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the search is part of the ongoing investigation into Smart’s disappearance. While officials provided limited details, stating only that they remain “committed to bringing Kristin home,” the location of the search has drawn immediate attention.

Public records and coverage by the Your Own Backyard podcast—a resource credited with helping investigators secure new witness testimony—identify the home as belonging to Susan Flores. Attempts to contact her for comment were unsuccessful as the search continued Wednesday afternoon.

“The Sheriff’s Office remains committed to bringing Kristin home to her family. No further information is available,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

The Context of a Cold Case Warmed by New Leads

Kristin Smart, a 19-year-old student at California Polytechnic State University, vanished in May 1996. For years, the case was considered cold until new investigative techniques and public pressure led to the arrest of Paul Flores and his father, Ruben Flores, in 2021.

Prosecutors alleged that Smart was killed during an attempted rape and that Paul Flores was the last person seen with her. In October 2022, Paul Flores was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. His father, Ruben, was acquitted of accessory charges, though prosecutors had alleged that Smart’s remains were initially buried on Ruben’s property before being moved.

The property searched Wednesday is distinct from Ruben Flores’s land, suggesting investigators are exploring alternative theories or locations regarding the disposal of evidence. This shift indicates that despite the conviction, authorities have not ruled out other potential sites connected to the Flores family network.

The Ongoing Quest for Closure

The search underscores the unique and painful dynamic of this case: a convicted killer who maintains his innocence, and a family desperate for physical proof of their daughter’s fate.

In March 2023, Paul Flores was sentenced to prison, where he has reportedly faced physical attacks from other inmates. In 2024, a judge ordered him to pay just over $350,000 in restitution to Smart’s family for costs incurred after her death. However, the family has publicly stated they would waive this financial restitution if Flores would disclose the location of Smart’s remains.

Flores’s attorney, Harold Mesick, has maintained that the defense does not know where the remains are located. Flores continues to plead not guilty to the charges, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation.

Institutional Commitment

San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow emphasized the legal system’s resolve to pursue every available avenue. “While those responsible for Kristin’s death — and those with knowledge of her whereabouts — could provide answers at any time, we remain firmly committed to using every lawful tool available to locate Kristin’s remains and to support her family until she is brought home,” Dow said.

The service of the warrant at Susan Flores’s home signals that the investigation is far from over. For the Smart family and the local community, each new search offers a fragile hope that the truth—and finally, closure—may yet be found.
