Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the acclaimed actress, has revealed the enduring anxiety she experiences regarding the health and well-being of her daughter, Malti Marie, born via surrogate in 2022. In a recent interview with Marie Claire, Chopra described a persistent fear stemming from Malti’s challenging start to life, spent over 100 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) “fighting for her life.”
The Weight of a Miracle
Chopra emphasized that Malti is “my miracle baby,” born after the couple faced difficulties with previous pregnancies. The intensity of the experience left her in a state of constant vigilance. The actress stated that she still experiences a visceral reaction when Malti is not within her immediate presence, describing it as “this feeling that your heart is running outside of your body.”
This fear is deeply rooted in the trauma of Malti’s premature arrival at 27 weeks. Chopra recalled the harrowing details of her daughter’s early days, including the difficulty medical staff had even intubating the tiny infant. “She was purple,” Chopra explained, “and we didn’t know…” The graphic imagery of those moments remains vivid in her mind.
Forced Disclosure and the NICU Battle
The couple was pressured into prematurely announcing Malti’s birth after details of the birth leaked to the press. They were left uncertain about her survival while facing public scrutiny. The three months spent in the NICU were described as a period where all other priorities dissolved.
Chopra recounted that she and Nick Jonas spent every day at the hospital, focused solely on their daughter’s recovery. Holding her for the first time, weighing just 1 pound, 11 ounces, ignited a fierce protective instinct within her: “I will go to the ends of the earth to protect you.”
A Mother’s Transformation
The experience fundamentally shifted Chopra’s priorities. She now centers her life around her daughter, acknowledging that “everything starts and ends with her.” The vulnerability of a premature infant has transformed her into a fiercely protective “tigress,” willing to defend her daughter at any cost.
The interview sheds light on the often-unspoken realities of premature births and the long-lasting emotional toll on parents. While celebrity births are often framed as idyllic, Chopra’s candidness offers a rare glimpse into the fear, trauma, and unwavering dedication that can accompany the arrival of a miracle baby.
